Cyprus - Gas
There's no mains gas in Cyprus although, at the beginning of 2005, the
Cypriot government was in discussion with Qatar about the possible supply of
liquefied natural gas. If this materialises, it won't be until around 2009, so
at least until then, users will be restricted to bottled gas. The price of
bottled gas is controlled by the government and is currently around CY4.50 for
a 10kg bottle, which will last an average family around a month when used just
for cooking. The initial price of a gas container is around CY15, and these can
be bought from petrol stations, grocery shops and supermarkets.
In rural areas, many people use as many gas appliances as possible,
e.g. for cooking, hot water and heating, although for a central heating system
you will need a gas tank (e.g.500 litres). You can have a combined gas hot water
and heating system installed, which is relatively inexpensive as well as
being cheap to run.
