Paphos (or Pafos) is really two towns in one - Kato (lower) Paphos and Ktima (upper) Paphos. Kato Paphos was one of the islands most important seaports during the Middle Ages, then fell into decline and langhuished for centuries until tourism and the rediscovery of its famed mosaics turned it into a burgeoning resort town.

Today, luxury hotels spread along the coast, east to west, and a modern centre is packed with souvenir shops, bars, cafes, nightspots and restaurants. Ktima Paphos, only 3 km away (2 miles) inland, seems a world away from the tourist Kato Paphos, with authentic Cypriot cafes and tavernas that cater for local tastes.

Three museums in Ktima Paphos - ethnographical, archealogical, and Byzantine - are well worth seeking out and visiting, each reflecting different eras on the island. Midway between the two are the eerie Tombs of the Kings, carved into the rocky hillside. Wealthy residents of the ancient city were entoumbed in these stone chambers from around the 3rd century. Despite their name, there is no evidence that Pafian royalty is buried here.

Paphos has some of it's best beaches on the eastern edge of the town, near Geroskipou, where the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) maintains a well managed, family friendly strand, and still further east at Floria Beach, next to Paphos airport.  Close to the centre of Kato Paphos, there is also a municipal beach beneath shady palm trees, with umbrellas and loungers for hire, a snack bar and restaurants.
